Pismo · The Letter
English: machine translation, not checked by a native speaker
Zorata si zori, majka dvoroj meti, | Dawn is breaking, mother sweeps the yard, |
| после двајсе лета татко од гурбет си иди, | posle dvajse leta tatko od gurbet si idi, | after twenty years father is coming back from abroad, |
| doma, pusto, da se priberi. | home, poor man, to gather himself in. |
| - Mamo mila, mamo, oti prsti kršiš? | - Mother dear, mother, why do you crack your fingers? |
Oti prsti kršiš, mamo, oti oči krieš, | Why do you crack your fingers, mother, why do you hide your eyes, |
| jandza imaš ti što ne spieš? | are you worried that you do not sleep? |
Kučinjata laat, prvi petli peat, | The dogs bark, the first roosters crow, |
| и на порти некој торпа, в' гради срце скокна, | i na porti nekoj torpa, v' gradi srce skokna, | and at the gate someone knocks, the heart leaps in the chest, |
| ete ni go domaḱinot! | here is our master of the house! |
Strča majka bosa, rezeto go trgna, | Mother runs barefoot, she pulls the latch, |
| а пред порти само писмо, и во писмо абер: | a pred porti samo pismo, i vo pismo aber: | but before the gate there is only a letter, and in the letter news: |
| si go prosti gospod Stojana. | may God forgive Stojan. |
Translator's notes
Origin unclear; reads like a modern composed song but I cannot name an author. 'јанѕа имаш' is my reading: roughly 'are you troubled/anxious'. 'Си го прости господ Стојана' means the letter announces Stojan's death.
